CBS Sports: Bears at Packers Preview: Renewal of a Great Rivalry, Will The Packers Defense Show Up
The Green Bay Packers proved in 2011 that you can have the best offense in the league and not be good enough to even get to the Conference Final. Even when you are 15-1 in the Regular Season because once you are in the playoffs, for the most part you play nothing but really good teams. And in a lot of cases you play complete teams that are good on both offense and defense, which is what the Packers. Played in the NFC Divisional Playoff against the New York Giants, so you are playing teams that can move the ball on offense and score points but are also good enough on defense. That if they don't stop you consistently, they can at least force you to make mistakes and take advantage of those mistakes. Force you to commit turnovers and score points off of them and move the ball well enough on offense to give their defense a break. Which is what happened to the Packers against the Giants against in the playoffs last year, playoff football is simply different then the Regular Season. Which I've already laid out and for the Packers to be a Super Bowl contender in 2012, the Packer defense is going to have to step up.
What the Packers showed last week against a team that was good on both sides of the ball in the San Francisco 49ers. Is that the Packers don't have a championship caliber defense at least not yet and the 49ers do and are good enough on offense to be a serious contender in the NFC. And the Packers will get a serious test in the Chicago Bears Thursday night and a chance to see if their defense. Can adjust and play well against a solid offense in the Bears especially with QB Jay Cutler and can the defense bounce back and take the next step.
